I am always recommending “The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin” by Josh Berk (in fact it is just now coming out in paperback) but I think it’s probably more appropriate for upper middle school and high schoolers.
Out of my three kids, I have two boys, and I cannot imagine having to worry about them being drafted (the older is almost 16). How hard that must be to have that hanging over your head — then having to worry even more when they go off to war :-(. Additionally, I think my 10 year old son might like reading this book also.
I LOVE that there are poems scattered through this book – what a unique way to move the story forward.
Thanks for being on the tour Serena!
Sounds like the poetry is a neat touch. The Girl and I haven’t reached that part yet.
No need to enter me, but I put the giveaway in my sidebar.
Finding solid books for young male readers can be a particular challenge…our award panels of late have definitely favored the female voice. Nancie Atwell’s school compiles gender-specific lists each year (created by the students) that are posted on their website http://www.c-t-l.org. It stays fresh and has some good classics too. Please consider me interested in this one. Thanks!
Thanks for the information. I hope that this one will be added to the list for the boys.
I turned 11 in 1969, so I was about Brody’s age at the time this book takes place. I have a feeling I’d really enjoy this one!
