Welcome to the 369th Virtual Poetry Circle!
Remember, this is just for fun and is not meant to be stressful.
Keep in mind what Molly Peacock’s book suggested.
Look at a line, a stanza, sentences, and images; describe what you like or don’t like; and offer an opinion. If you missed my review of her book, check it out here.
Today’s poem is from John Updike:
Ex-Basketball Player
What do you think?
Updike wrote some nice poems. This one reminds me of an update of AE Housman’s “To an Athlete Dying Young” where he ironically examines the fate of people who reach their prime when very young.
He definitely paints a picture, but I’ll admit that I didn’t much care for this poem.
