R.I.P. Charlee (10/8/1997 – 8/13/2011)

Too Long a Trail

This is all I can muster since losing my dog, Charlee. He was my best friend, and my cuddle bug for a long, long time. There are very few photo albums in my house that don’t have a picture of Charlee in them, and I still have his family tree/ and the collar he wore when Anna and I got him at the pet store.

I will miss his little Ewok, teddy bear puppy face, his love grunts, and his wet kisses. Most of all I’ll miss his happy smile, and yes, he smiled…all the time…mostly with his tongue hanging out.

He was always there to greet me at the door and never ever got mad at me when I vented about anything. Most of all he would sit by my side or on my lap when I cried at a sad movie or lost love or lost family members. He would watch dog shows with me on television. He was full of energy, bouncing around, peeing on shoes in greeting, and getting his head stuck in a fish box.

Dog in a Box

He may have done all those things: eaten glass, chocolate, and tin foil . . . lets not forget the half of a corn cob from the trash. But he was always happy and content just to be loved, hugged, and kissed. He love the snow and would catch snowballs in his mouth and eat them and catch frisbees in the summer. He may have been a purebred, but he was no priss. We went hiking and he’s even taken a dip or two in a pool or pond. Anna (here’s her post) and I even took him to Boston Public Garden where he chased the geese into the pond and they preceded to follow him around the lake as we walked.

I won’t go into his many illnesses, but I will tell you this, he’s not suffering anymore and that’s all I can ask for, even if my daughter won’t remember him or how he welcomed her into the family by sitting outside her nursery door guarding her that first week she was home.

Oh, I am so sorry to hear the Charlee has died. I know that it is heartbreaking, as if your heart has been ripped out. And the crying comes at the strangest times! You will always remember him with joy and love. I always believed that the spirit remains to c omfort the owner. I hope that you have comfort in the memories and the care you provided for Charlee.

  6. Serena, I am so sorry for your loss of Charlee. They are precious and manage to find a special place in our hearts. Thank you to Charlee for the lovely memories.

  7. I’m so sorry Serena. We love our dogs so fiercely and yet we are granted them such a brief amount of time. You’ll always have a Charlee shaped hole with you but hopefully the ache will ease with time.

  8. I am so sorry Serena! It is never easy to say goodbye to our fur babies. Charlee was a handsome fellow. I think he was a very lucky dog to have two families who loved him dearly. He is over the rainbow bridge where he is free from pain. This post is a wonderful tribute to Charlee!

  9. I’m so sorry, Serena. We recently lost our 19-year-old cat, so I truly feel your pain right now. There’s never enough time . . .

  10. So sorry for your loss. A beautiful tribute to an amazing member of your family.

  11. Thanks everyone. I appreciate your sympathy. These photos are how I choose to remember him, not as he was in the end, ravaged by an undiagnosable disease — wasted away and without much of his fur.

  12. I’m very sorry that your dog is no longer with you. From his photos he does look like a very sweet and snugly buddy.

  13. Charlee was a beautiful dog and I am sure that he knew he was a lucky dog with two families who loved him. It is hard to lose a member of your family.

    Sending you hugs.

  17. I’m so sorry for both of you…tears are dripping down my face just thinking about your pain. He sounds like the best dog ever……thinking of you!

  18. I’m so sorry for your loss, Serena. *Hugs*

  19. Beautiful post, my friend. So glad you found the fish box photo. I have lots of photos of Charlee, but not too many on my computer. He will definitely be missed, and it is sad that Wiggles didn’t get to know him, but at least we all have plenty of funny stories to tell her when she’s older. Love you!

  20. That first photo is so adorable. So sorry for your loss. I read Anna’s post and teared up.

  21. Serena, so sorry for the loss of your beloved companion:(

  22. My heart is breaking for you and all those who love Charlee. My thoughts are with you.

  23. Aww, I am so sorry to hear about this. Losing a pet is such heart break 🙁

  24. I know you’re all devastated, but I hope you can find some comfort in knowing Charlee had so many people to love him.

  25. You know I’m crying with you Serena. I’m so sorry and I know how hard this is for you. Our pets are big parts of our family and losing one is devastating. Please know I’m thinking of you and of Charlee. I’m here if you need me my friend. Hugs to you.

  26. Aw, Serena, I am so sorry for your loss *wipes tears away* It is never, never easy to say good-bye. Charlie was a beautiful boy – and obviously one of the special ones. I hope he has found Caribou and Argus up there over the Rainbow Bridge…and that they are frolicking happily together. *hugs*

  27. Oh no, that is so sad Serena. Losing pets is so so hard. I can’t even think about my babies that I’ve lost without crying, even over the ones that have been gone for over 7 years. Please know that my heart goes out to you, and understand all the sadness you’ve got right now. (Sending a big hug.)

  28. So sorry to hear that you and your families have lost Charlee. I know he was greatly loved by everybody. Sending hugs and love your way.

  29. I am sorry to hear about your dog! It is terrible to lose a pet!

  30. Saying goodbye to our beloved pets is so hard and my heart hurts for you and your family.

  31. I’m so sorry to hear this. Was Charlee a Keeshond? My very first dog, Paddington, was a Keeshond. My parents got him when I was 2 and by the time I was 12, I was saying goodbye to him. It’s a heartbreaking time, pets become like family members. Just enjoy your memories and know that he’s in a better place 🙂

  32. I am sorry for yours and Anna’s loss of a beloved pet. It sounds like you have some great memories to cherish.

  33. *hug*

  34. Beth Hoffman says

I cried yesterday when I read Anna’s post, and again I’m crying. It’s devastating to lose a beloved furbaby. Charlee had a long life with so much love, and that is something to always cherish.

Blessings to everyone in this time of sorrow.

  35. I am so sorry to read this. He looks beautiful in the pictures and seems like a wonderful friend. Hugs!

  36. My husband has never met a stray he didn’t rescue, so, over the course of 30+ years, we’ve had many animals in our home. Each and every one has had a distinct, but loving, personality, and each has left an indelible mark on our hearts–no matter how long or short a time we were blessed with their company. It hurts to lose them, and I am sorry for your loss.

  37. So sorry for your loss! My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you and Anna and your families!
