Review: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare (audio)

announcements

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare, narrated by Jason Dohring (yes, that Jason Dohring) and Sophie Turner, is the final book in The Mortal Instruments series. Sebastian (aka Jonathan Morgenstern) has been turning shadowhunters into dark warriors and is poised to take over the world.

Be aware that this is the final book in the series, and you have to read these in order. You’ve been warned that there are possible spoilers below.

Sebastian has created a dark mortal cup and has begun transforming shadowhunters into his own mindless dark guard. While the shadowhunters try to track him and uncover his plans, with little success, Clary, Jace, Simon, Alec, and Isabelle are the ones thinking outside the box and working outside the laws of the Clave.

The Endarkened are stronger, faster, and demon-blood powered, just like Sebastian, who still longs for his sister’s approval. A sister he never grew up with but who is the only family who hasn’t wronged him. At least not yet. He also seems to think he’s smarter than her and can strong-arm her into his own plan. How many shadowhunters will be lost in this dark war?

Clary has become a calm strategist and it’s great to see her and Jace working together and communicating about plans and emotions, etc. Their trust has built over the course of the series, and the relationship is definitely maturing. Simon comes into his own in this book as well, even as he is thrust back into his mortal life by the end.

City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare reveals who can be trusted, who still has secrets, and what even immortals can learn from mortals. Its a satisfying and action-packed conclusion to this series.
