Rules for Aging and Larceny by Julia London, narrated by Christina Moore, is a tongue-in-cheek Ocean’s Eleven.
Frances Deluca isn’t your typical 70-year-old retiree looking for a life of leisure. In fact, she goes full tilt in everything she does, which is probably why her competitive nature gets her booted from the pickle-ball team. She’s worried her son is going to place her in a boring old-folks home and wants to go out with a bang, especially after she has a fall and learns something about her once-robust health she never expected.
In her 20s, her girl gang of Joan, Edie, and Irene got into some trouble even though they saw themselves as invincible. They knew how to use their female wiles to lure in men and to get what they wanted, until one of them broke the cardinal rule: never fall for the mark.
Frances is on a mission to get the gang back together for one last wild ride, and this ride will put to the test what she remembers of their time together and their abilities to pull off one last heist.
What I loved about this book is that you have to suspend disbelief that these women can pull this off, but given out society and how it views older ladies, it’s not that much of a stretch. I’ve seen ageism in action, and I can tell you that underestimating anyone is always a bad idea. These women are like The Golden Girls, even with the Sicilian mother who is ready to kick butt and make people disappear, though she’s not any of their mothers.
Rules for Aging and Larceny by Julia London is a delight. I enjoyed every minute with these women as they navigate the new realities of a heist in the modern era. With a bit of serious reconciliation, these women come to see how much they truly meant to each other. It was a great summer read.
