Harvest Season by Brynne Weaver, narrated by Robert Hatchet and Samantha Brentmoor, does what I hate with books in a series – it ends on a cliffhanger. The next book is not even out yet! This kills me.
I digress.
If you haven’t read the other book in this series, stop reading.
Cape Carnage is rife with death, or at least the semblance of it. From the thumb initiation drink to the gruesome decor and kitschy store, the little town is a hotbed for the dark arts. At least that’s what the Sleuth Seekers are hoping when they arrive to investigate the death of one of their own.
Nolan Rhodes, inexplicably, sticks himself right in the middle of search and rescue operations for missing people he already knows won’t be found, but he inserts himself to keep tabs on the investigation and keep Harper Starling from harm. But it is clear that the marketing of this town is about to unravel and reveal one of its darkest, best-kept secrets.
Now that Nolan no longer wants to kill Harper, it’s clear he only thinks about one thing. There are so many passages in this book about how captivating and beautiful she is, it becomes tiresome.
It is a dark romance, and there are things in this book I was not keen on, at all, but the dark humor was fun, as well as the sticky situations Harper and Nolan find themselves in as they try to cover the tracks of one beloved mentor who just happens to be unraveling due to Alzheimer’s disease.
These two are stuck in a maze and don’t even know it, until they are trapped like rats. While I may have figured out long ago who the darkest character in town is, they are absolutely clueless. Weaver has crafted another wild ride, perfect for the October season of Halloween and ghouls.
RATING: Quatrain
