National Poetry Month Giveaway for Readers

I hope everyone has enjoyed some of the National Poetry Month Blog Tour, traveled to new blogs, learned a bit about poetry, and found some poets you’d like to try.

Today, I’m hosting a giveaway for Suzanne Frischkorn‘s newest collection, Girl on a Bridge.  Check out these two videos of her reading two of her poems, Bees and Indiscretion of an American Wife, 1954.

Also please check out this poem from her collection:

The First Signs

And forsythia tumbles
over the fence
wild with yellow–

When I was seven a wasp
landed on my lip
drawn by the sweetness
of my mother’s red lipstick

–while purple flagstones
split with grass.

The same day a child next door
squeezed six new kittens dead.
That’s when I knew–

There are two shades of still.

    • to get the link, you just right click where it tells you how many minutes or seconds ago you tweeted the comment, and it gives you a full link to use. No worries though. I’ve counted it.

  5. I liked the videos, I enjoy listening more-so then reading, seems like I can hear words better for some reason.

  7. I guess I am still a traditionalist — reading poetry works best for me. And, that way, I can have my own images come up as I read, also. But I know poetry isn’t just restricted to the printed page.

With a poetry book, you can pick it up at will. However, youTube might be good for exposing poetry to people who might not otherwise come across it in a traditional way (such as bookstore browsing)!

  8. Oh I really liked the videos! I always love listening to poetry. I just think you get so much more out of it.

I think my favorite one is “Bees”. I may have to listen to them again though later 🙂

  9. Love Frischkorn’s work in general.
As far as YouTube poetry videos, well, I’m not convinced that it actually helps me experience the poem in a new way – the videos can distract from the poem. I like to see poets read their poems on YouTube though!

  10. I really like the videos. I am a very visual person, so adding images to words is great.

I liked “Bees”. I didn’t look at the run length and was surprised at how short it was, but it was a happy surprise since the poem wrapped up in a way I wasn’t expecting.

  11. I really liked “The First Signs.” That’s my kind of poetry. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of YouTube, but I’d rather watch videos of poems being read than some of the other junk on there. Even so, I love to hear poets read their own work, and I can see how YouTube can be useful in that respect. I’ve added the giveaway to my sidebar.

  12. I really enjoy listening to someone read their own poetry. They can add their own feelings to the words as no one else can.
I liked both the poems you have here on video, but I probably prefer “Bees.”
